The basics

What is anthracite filter media?

Anthracite filter media is a graded anthracite coal used as a filter layer in water treatment. It is selected from deep-well minerals, screened to a good grain shape and washed repeatedly.

Because it is lighter than sand, anthracite sits as the upper layer in dual and multimedia filters. Its well-graded grains hold more suspended solids in the bed, which raises filter-bed capacity and filtration efficiency. It is hard, resists crushing and abrasion, and does not dissolve in acidic, alkaline or neutral water.

Why it matters

Why buyers choose Carbon King anthracite

  • High fixed carbon — 90% minimum, up to 95%.
  • Low ash — around 5%, with volatile matter of 7 – 8%.
  • Washed and graded — screened to a good grain shape for even bed formation.
  • Chemically stable — stands up to common acids and moderate alkalis.
  • Export ready — documents, custom packing and labelling handled by our team.

Selection guide

How to choose the right anthracite size

  • Two standard sizes — 0.6 – 1.2 mm and 0.8 – 1.6 mm — the right one depends on your filter design and the sand below it.
  • Bed position — anthracite is lighter than sand, so it forms the upper layer in dual and multimedia filters.
  • Custom sizes — tell us your filter design and we can grade to order.
  • Need organics removed too? — add a layer of granular activated carbon — anthracite removes solids, activated carbon removes dissolved organics.

Not sure? Share your filter type, bed depth and water quality, and our team will suggest a size and quantity.

Supply

Packing, samples & export

  • Packing — bags and bulk bags; custom packing and labelling on request.
  • Samples — available before a bulk order; tell us your application and grade.
  • MOQ — depends on grade and packing; trial quantities can be discussed for new buyers.
  • Shipping — worldwide by sea in containers, with export documentation handled by our team.
  • Lead time — shared with your quotation, based on quantity, packing and destination port.
FAQ

Anthracite Filter Media — common questions

What is anthracite filter media used for?

It is the upper filter layer in dual and multimedia filters, removing suspended solids and turbidity in drinking water, municipal and industrial water, RO pre-treatment, pools and wastewater.

Is anthracite the same as activated carbon?

No. Anthracite filters out suspended particles; activated carbon adsorbs dissolved organics, chlorine, colour and odour. Many plants use both in one filter train.

What sizes do you supply?

Standard sizes are 0.6 – 1.2 mm and 0.8 – 1.6 mm, or graded to order.

Do you export anthracite filter media?

Yes. We supply buyers in 18+ countries and handle export documents and container shipping.
